The idea of social isolation has become more in the open. Big Brothers Big Sisters Oxford says that 73% of youth in their programs have felt or are feeling social isolation.
OXFORD COUNTY - The number of youth feeling social isolation has seen an increase.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Oxford posted on their X page that 73% of youth in their programs have felt or are feeling social isolation.
Executive Director, Kristen Ralph says the issue has become stronger since the pandemic as many youth were not able to get out and interact with friends, or be a part of social groups. Ralph adds that the information comes right from the source.
"We have our parents and caregivers fill out a needs registry. What that does is get information from the parents about the children in terms of adverse childhood experiences."
Upon receiving this information it was noticed that social isolation was on a lot of the lists. Ralph wants Oxford County to know that the organization is always there to help.
She says that there is always opportunities for people to join Big Brothers Big Sisters.
"One of the biggest pieces of it is mentors. So volunteers coming through the doors to offer support for young people."
Ralph adds that there are 11 different programs Big Brothers Big Sisters offers, so if a one-on-one approach is not for you, you will still be able to find a way to help youth in Oxford County.
