County Offers Free Well Water Testing

Residents Have Until Oct. 31st to Submit Their Samples

Oxford Public Health is offering free well water testing to local residents this month.

Health officials say private well owners should be testing their water for bacteria at least 3-times a year, and once a year for nitrate and fluoride levels.

Public Health tests well water for bacteria free all year round, but testing for nitrates and fluoride is normally done by private laboratories for a fee.

Samples must be less than 48 hours old before they are submitted.

You can bring the sample to the Pubic Health building on at 410 Buller Street in Woodstock, Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Communities like Brownsville, Ingersoll, Lakeside, Springford have historically had higher volumes of naturally occurring fluroide, than the provincially reccomended level of 1.5 mg/L.  This can lead to "fluorosis", or discolouration of the teeth in children.

High levels of nitrates can lead to "Blue Baby Syndrome" in infants less than six months of age, affecting the blood's ability to carry oxygen.
