Daylight Saving Time will end this Sunday and the Woodstock Fire Department is reminding everyone to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
WOODSTOCK - The clocks are set to fall back this weekend, which means it's time to check your alarms.
Lisa Woods, Public Information Coordinator at the Woodstock Fire Department, says it's a great time to change batteries in both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. She also says you need to check if they're up to date.
"They only last for 10 years. If they don't have a 'replace by' sticker on the side of the alarm, then they may have a manufacturer's date on the back of the alarm and it's 10 years from then that they need to be replaced."
It's important to note that if you need to replace an alarm, hardwired alarms must be replaced by hardwired alarms, and the same goes for battery alarms.
Smoke alarms have to be on every story in your home and adjacent to the sleeping areas, while carbon monoxide alarms only have to be close to sleeping areas. This is to ensure that the alarm would wake you in the case of an emergency.
There are fines for not maintaining the alarms in your home. They start at $360 and under the fire code, they can become quite large if necessary.
Daylight Saving Time will end at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday November 6th.
