Lottery Scam

Police are warning the public about a lottery scam making the rounds in the area.

THAMES CENTRE - The lottery scam is making the rounds in the region once again.

Only two weeks after a senior citizen in Thames Centre lost over $19,000 from their savings, another resident from the area was targeted with the scam. This time the person became suspicious and called police before sending over any money. How the scam works is you will get contacted from someone claiming you have won a large amount of money. In order to claim your prize you need to send over money. In this case the resident was bombarded with phone calls and introduced to numberous people over the phone claiming to work for a number of different banking institutions.

Police are warning the public you are never going to win a contest you didn't enter and if you get a call like this to contact police immediately.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center defines frauds such as these as a “Prize Scam - Seniors are solicited over the phone or email and advised they are the winner of a large lottery or sweepstakes. Prior to receiving any winnings, the consumer must first pay an upfront fee. No winnings are ever received.

"It's not always easy to spot a scam, and new ones are invented every day."
