Oxford County Quarter Auctions usually holds auctions to benefit local causes, but on Wednesday May 25th the proceeds will benefit those affected by the Fort McMurray wildfire.
WOODSTOCK - There will be a quarter auction at the Moose Family Centre in Woodstock in order to benefit residents in Fort McMurray.
Oxford County Quarter Auctions tries to hold these auctions about once a month in order to benefit local organizations. Co-Founder Loretta Walters explains why they do this.
"What our goal is to raise money locally to support our local charities that are going to help local people. Sometimes when you give to larger charities, the money doesn't stay local and isn't used local."
Walters tells us why they decided to hold a special auction for the city in Alberta.
"It's to show Fort McMurray that Woodstock cares."
For those of you who haven't been to a quarter auction before, here's how a quarter auction works:
- A $5 ticket will get you a numbered paddle, which will have a matching chip in a drawing basket.
- Vendors at the auction will show you which items they have up for grabs and their value.
- The value of the item determines how many quarters you use to bid (ex: a $20 item would be a 2 quarter bid).
- Once you place your bid you hold your numbered paddle up and if your number is chosen from the pot you win!
Some of the vendors lined up are Thirty-one, Tupperware, Scentsy, Origami Owl and Pampered Chef. Similar vendors are also expected to attend another quarter auction on June 2nd, which will benefit Open Sky Bike Cooperation.
The Fort McMurray auction will take place on Wednesday May 25th at the Moose Family Centre in Woodstock. The doors will open sometime between 6:15pm-6:30pm in the evening and the auction is set to start at 7pm.
Since February, Oxford County Quarter Auctions has raised just over $7,000 for local charities. You can find more information about upcoming quarter auctions on their Facebook page.
