With it getting darker earlier this time of year it is important to be on the lookout as two people were hit by a vehicle in Shakespeare
PERTH COUNTY - With it staying darker longer it is important for motorists and pedestrians to look out for one another.
A 48 year old female and a 40 year old male were struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, shortly before 7pm in Shakespeare after attempting to cross the street. OPP Constable Kees Wijnands offers tips on how to look for pedestrians once the sun sets. "We always say slow down and really concentrate on your surroundings, so for a motorist we are really telling you to pay attention and look for those pedestrians, especially when you are making turns either a right turn or a left turn."
Charges have been laid following the incident when the vehicle attempted to make a left turn, Constable Wijnands provides a few things pedestrians can do to make sure vehicles see them at night. "For pedestrians make sure you know what is around you, so concentrate on your surroundings, and make sure you give that extra shoulder check when you cross and of course at night. When you are walking make sure you are visible by wearing light clothing and something reflective if possible." The 32 year old driver of the vehicle was charged with failing to yield for pedestrians.
Constable Wijnands spoke to Heart FM if there is an increase in pedestrian vehicle collisions. "This time of year we don't have as many pedestrians because of the colder temperatures, if you look at some of the Toronto statistics they have had some high number of pedestrian collisions." The two walkers were sent to hospital with minor injuries.
