Joe Biden will not seek a second term as the President of the United States.
UNITED STATES - United States President Joe Biden will move out of the White House later this year.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon, Biden announced that he will not accept the Democratic nomination for this fall's presidential election, adding he wants to focus all of his energy on his duties as President for the remainder of his term. He also endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic nominee.
Biden says he will address the nation later this week to provide more details behind his decision to step down.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released his own statement yesterday, thanking President Biden for his service. He called him a great man, a true friend, and a partner to Canadians.
The Democratic Party has seen a record number of online donations since Biden's announcement, with close to $50 million total.
The party had been urging Biden to drop out of the presidential race after his performance in the debate against Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump. He also had multiple missteps during the recent NATO leaders summit.
The new Democratic nominee will be selected in Chicago next month. Former US Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman says he will support whoever is selected, but thinks the party should open the selection process up so delegates can select any capable nominee at the convention.

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best… pic.twitter.com/x8DnvuImJV

I’ve known President Biden for years. He’s a great man, and everything he does is guided by his love for his country. As President, he is a partner to Canadians — and a true friend.
