Para Hockey legend Brad Bowden relives his experience from 2010 to highlight why Canada cannot take this game easy tonight as they try to make the gold medal game.
Canada will compete for a medal at the Para Ice hockey tournament at the Beijing Paralympics.
Which medal they compete for is still up in the air. Canada takes on Korea in the first of two semi final matchups tonight. The puck drops at 11:05 pm EST. If Canada wins tonight, it means the worst they can come home with is a silver medal.
Oxfords Garrett Riley is hoping to suit up for Canada again tonight. The way this tournament has been formatted with Russia being kicked out at the last minute, means Canada is in the semi finals after only playing 2 games.
They lost the first game 5-0 to the United States. Then they played this same Korea team on Tuesday night, beating them 9-4. Riley did not suit up for Canada against the US but he was in the lineup against Korea and notched an assist.
Heart FM reached out to our Para Ice hockey expert and former player Brad Bowden. Bowden says Canada can not take this Korea team lightly. Unfortunately he knows all to well, what can happen when you start looking ahead.
Bowden was one of the key members of the 2010 team in Vancouver, who seemed destined to play in the gold medal game. They had a semi final matchup with Japan, a team they had never lost too and ended up losing.
Take a listen to the interview with Bowden where he talks about the following:
- The format for the games and Canada making the semi finals after just 2 games.
- His experience at the 2010 games and what Team Canada can learn from that tonight.
- Breaking down how Canada needs to play to make sure they get a spot in the gold medal game.
- How important this tournament is for some of the veterans on the team, who might be playing in their last Paralympics.
