Caressant Care in Woodstock is among the partners who are helping ease bed space in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
WOODSTOCK - A retirement home in Woodstock is partnering with a few organizations to free up hospital beds during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Caressant Care is collaborating with the South West Local Health Integration Network, CarePartners and Oxford Hospitals to transfer patients currently occupying Alternative Level of Care (ALC) beds.
In a press release sent out this week, Communications and Marketing Manager Stuart Oakley says the effort will help hospital make sure there are beds available for patients who are acutely ill.
"“We have been able to accommodate ten patients at our Retirement Home. These patients will be cared for by CarePartners while in our Retirement Home and we have been able to create an enclosed unit within the building. This effort will help hospitals ensure that they have beds available for more acutely ill patients. This is a great example of system collaboration among partners, working together to ensure that patients receive the right care at the right place at the right time. Woodingford Lodge also helped this initiative by donating some beds.”
The ALC beds are used for patients who no longer need hospital care and are either waiting to be placed in long term care, home or community care.
Director – South West, CarePartners Beth Byrnes says the initiative benefits everyone.
“More than ever before, we are seeing communities come together in remarkable ways to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Caressant Care Transitional Unit is one shining example of this. We are pleased to be an integral part of improving local hospital capacity through this initiative, ensuring that beds are available in area hospitals for those who need them most. By wrapping high-quality, 24/7 care around these patients in the community – through the work of our dedicated frontline personal support workers, nurses and therapists, we are helping to keep people safe, but in the most appropriate setting. This benefits us all. I commend the leadership and collaboration demonstrated by our partners at the South West LHIN, Caressant Care Retirement Home and Oxford Hospitals to establish this important initiative at such a crucial time for our health system."
VP Patient Care/CNO Woodstock Hospital Jayne Menard and Chief Nursing Executive and Director Clinical Services, Quality and Safety Alexandra and Tillsonburg District Hospitals Cheryl Pfaff say it's been a collective effort from their partners in the community.
“The transfer of patients from Alexandra, Tillsonburg and Woodstock Hospitals awaiting Long Term Care
beds to Caressant Care Retirement Home has been a collective effort of many community partners. It is a wonderful example of cooperation and collaboration amongst this group to ensure the safety and wellbeing of seniors in Oxford County.”
It's estimated approximately 4,665 patients designated as requiring an alternate level of care in Ontario.
MSW, RSW Director Home and Community Care | South West LHIN, Rebecca Sutcliffe says they're excited to collaborate.
“The South West LHIN is excited to have partnered with CCRH, the Oxford Hospitals and Care Partners to help move 10 patients from the acute care setting on a temporary basis. The patients will continue to receive the right level of support, while freeing these acute care beds for COVID-19 related surge. The South West LHIN would like to say a big thank you to everyone who worked together for so many hours to pull this care model together, including Woodingford Lodge LTC, who helped with equipment to get this project off the ground by graciously donating beds, and the city works department who donated their time to deliver the beds to the retirement home. The level of collaboration to pull this together was outstanding.”
Director of Organizational Development / Interim ED Caressant Care Woodstock Carol Bradley praises all of the healthcare partners involved.
“I can't thank our healthcare partners enough for coming together so quickly during these extraordinary times to make a difference for our most vulnerable. We are pleased to be part of the solution to easing bed pressures faced by our local hospitals.”
