The City of Woodstock has launched a public consultation period as it considers renaming Vansittart Park after two local artists.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is looking to rename Vansittart Park after two prominent local artists.
The City is looking for some feedback from the public before making a decision. The Woodstock Art Gallery is spearheading the renaming efforts. They recommend renaming the west side of Vansittart Park at Ingersoll Avenue the Florence Carlyle Park, with a section designated as the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden.
Bruce Flowers was born in Woodstock in 1947 and was a beloved educator in the City. He passed away in 2018 and left his estate to the Woodstock Art Gallery. The only provision was that the funds were to be used "for the purpose of establishing an outside figurative sculpture garden.”
The public figurative sculpture will be installed in 2022. The Parks and Rec department has developed a conceptual plan for the park. Art Gallery Curator Mary Reid says the park would be named after prominent Canadian painter Florence Carlyle.
“This is an incredible opportunity to acknowledge two artists who have had a profound impact in the community and at a national level. To date there has been a lack of recognition and acknowledgment of Florence Carlyle in Woodstock, despite the critical role she played in our region’s cultural heritage and as a boundary-breaking female artist. We are incredibly grateful to the Flowers Estate for helping to drive this project forward.”
Woodstock City Council is holding a public consultation on the renaming of the park. Residents can respond to an online survey until July 26, 2021. You can find the survey online here.
