Council denied a request from Sainte Marguerite-Bourgeoys & Notre Dame for reduced ice rental fees for their Hockey Canada program
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City council has denied a request from the Sainte Marguerite-Bourgeoys and Notre Dame Hockey Academy for a 40% rate reduction in ice rental fees during the day.
Council felt they didn't want to set a precedent and denied the request.
Principal Nicole Plante-Cooper says the academy was given a certified seal of approval from Hockey Canada and the staff who teach at the hockey academy have to go to Calgary to get certified training from Hockey Canada. Hockey Canada also does an audit of the program and they attend some of the classes to make sure they are meeting the curriculum.
Plante-Cooper says they have noticed a big difference from the students who participate in the academy since it was installed in September of 2014. She says the kids have more concentration and it gives them something to look forward to when coming to school every day. It also provides an outlet for kids who need to move every day and their academics have improved in the classroom. She says when they come back from the Academy and into the classroom they are ready to work and ready to learn because they have already burned up a lot of energy playing hockey. It also promotes good sportsmanship. Currently the program costs $650 per student to participate and if council had approved the rate reduction it would have saved each student about $200 to sign up.
