The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is looking for someone interested in making a new friend.
WOODSTOCK - A couple of hours a week could make a huge difference in someone's life.
The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is looking for Volunteers for their Companion Program.
Those who sign up will be matched with someone in their community with Alzheimer's or Dementia and they simply spend a couple hours a week. Volunteer Wilfried Van Haren talks about what he does with his companion.
"He loves to go out with me in the car and drive around and see the area's where he lived and he can still name the farms and the people who used to live there. In a way it's amazing to see and for me it's very rewarding."
Van Haren says the program really has positive benefits for him and his companion.
"To be honest as much as he gets something out of it, I probably get even more out of it to be honest, it's taking only a few hours of my week and I know those hours are well spent."
Executive Director Shelley Green explains how this can benefit the patient.
"Social interaction is just so important for our welfare. We need companionship we need to have that time with other people to feel valued and cared for."
Those interested in volunteering can call the Alzheimer's Society Oxford; 519-421-2466. Ask to speak with Robyn Fox, the Volunteer Companion Program Coordinator.
