Council to Consider Voting Options for Next Election

When you cast your ballot in 2014, will it be paper ballots, or could you be voting by phone or Internet? That's up for discussion at Woodstock City Council Thursday night. Voting options for the October 2014 municipal election is up for debate, and council has four options to weigh. The cheapest option, at $70,000 is the status quo, which would be paper ballots at traditional polling stations across the city. Internet voting only would be $80,000, and would see people voting on-line, and polling stations equipped with laptops and tablets. A combination of Internet and phone voting would be $90,000. And there's an option of having Internet and phone voting for advance polls, with traditional paper ballots on election day. That would cost almost double at $157,000. Internet voting would see people logging in using their dedicated PIN number, and confirming their birth date before casting a ballot. Although there are security concerns with unsupervised voting, the report to council indicates of 44 municipalities that used electronic voting last election, none reported concerns with fraud.
