The Woodstock Fire Department responded to a massive corn field fire on County Road 3 yesterday.
WOODSTOCK - No one was hurt following a massive field fire just outside Woodstock.
It happened on County Road 3 yesterday afternoon and the Woodstock Fire Department arrived on scene at around 4:00 p.m. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods was there as well.
"I arrived shortly after the crews arrived and there was a substantial amount of the corn field on fire but quickly when the wind shifted, the fire shifted and a substantial amount of the field did burn."
They wound up calling in another tanker from East Zorra-Tavistock for some extra water. They were able to get the blaze under control and it was contained to only the one field. They cleared the scene shortly after 6:00 p.m.
Woods says the land owner started the fire intentionally.
"It was basically an open air burn and the wind shifted and sparks spread into the field which ignited the field. It quickly became out of control so the farmer was unable to control it on his own."
She adds there was no loss for the farmer because it isn't terrible for a field to incur a fire like this.
Even though we've experienced a lot of snow melt over the past couple of weeks, Woods says the conditions are very dry out there and even a small fire could easily become out of control.
