Dangerous TikTok Challenge a Real Fire Hazard

The Woodstock Fire Department is warning teenagers about a dangerous new TikTok challenge that creates a real fire hazard.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department is warning teenagers about a dangerous new TikTok challenge.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says it is a real fire hazard.

"What kids are doing, is they are putting pennies in behind wall chargers to create fire hazards, we haven't heard reports of injuries from this, but there has been substantial fire damage reported. We just want to remind kids that just because other people are doing it, you don't need to do it too. Fire travels very quickly and can cause damage to property or life."

Woods adds we have not had any reports of this in Woodstock.

"Hopefully we are getting ahead of the problem and making sure kids know, this is not an appropriate use of the app, if you want to make a TikTok challenge, challenge people to check their alarms or practice their home escape plans."

The Electrical Safety Authority has also issued a warning about the challenge. Chief Public Safety Officer Dr. Joel Moody says that despite the electrical damage caused by their actions, some TikTok users continue to put themselves and others at immediate risk for
injury or fatality.

“While no known injuries have been reported so far, the popularity of this challenge and the serious risk posed by the actions in these videos are very concerning. Electricity is unforgiving, and no family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one or their home because of a social media trend.”

Every year in Ontario, 110 kids under 15 go to the hospital because of a preventable electrical injury.
