TILLSONBURG - An elderly couple from Tillsonburg is out $4,000 after falling victim to the grandparent scam. Oxford OPP were called on Saturday after the couple received a call from a man claiming to be a lawyer for their son. He told the couple the son had been in a motor vehicle collision and needed them to wire $4,000 to an insurance company in Peru to avoid legal problems. Unfortunately for the victims in this case they wired the money before checking the facts. This is commonly known as the grandparent scam and the fraudsters like to target elderly people who may not have been in contact with their loved ones recently. Oxford OPP are reminding the public to never wire money to anyone unless you are 100 percent certain you know where that money is going.
