Oxford Gardens retirement home will nearly double in size once an expansion is complete. That expansion got underway today with a groundbreaking ceremony. The $14-million expansion should be complete by 2013. It will include a mini-golf course and a bar and dining lounge. Many of the rooms in the new building will have glass balconies. When complete, Oxford Gardens will feature 186 rooms. Owner Bill Van Haeren says with a waiting list of over 90 local seniors wanting to get into Oxford Gardens, they'll have no issue filling the 84 room expansion. "Everybody said it was going to be a long shot, 4-years-ago and we ended up filling it in 11-months, and there's been a waiting list ever since...and it's still growing." Van Haeren believes the social community of Oxford Gardens is drawing seniors. Part of today's announcement included something for the current residents, a new transportation van to take them on outings. General Manager Nelia Hunt says the seniors eyes lit up at the announcement. "It's like Christmas for them. The new van will be a 20-passenger van, which will compliment the one we already have which is a 12-passenger. Just with the expansion we're being pro-active and we were able to get one sooner, so they'll be able to enjoy it first."
