Out of seven nominations four local sports heroes were chosen to be added to the prestigious hall of fame.
INGERSOLL - Four more people are about to be honoured as part of the Ingersoll Sports Hall of Fame.
Curator of the Ingersoll Cheese and Agricultural Museum and the Sports Hall of Fame Scott Gillies says they received seven nominations this year, but they were able to narrow it down to four inductees. "Becky Huntley Elliot - her main sport was basketball, although she seems to have excelled in a lot of other sports. John Bartram - John 'Wacky' Bartram is a gentleman who has been involved in sports as an athlete and a builder and coach from the 1930s until the present time. Rick Witcomb is being inducted because he's been a lifelong baseball player. And the 1989 Hurley's IGA Tykes, which is a kids' baseball team that won the Ontario provincial championship 1989."
The four sports heroes will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on October 3rd. Gillies encourages the public to come out and help them cheer on our local champions during a social before the ceremony. "A number of the inductees have played baseball. So the theme will be 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game.' And it ties into all the excitement around the Blue Jays too. We're going to have a typical sort of baseball meal - Todd's Dogs are going to cater for it."
The night also includes a silent auction with proceeds going to help put an addition onto the museum where all the Sports Hall of Fame inductees will be permanently honoured. A special guest speaker will also be making an appearance - Ingersoll Pan Am Athlete Hillary Elliott.
The social starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Ingersoll District Memorial Centre. The ceremony will follow at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and can be picked up at the Ingersoll Cheese and Agricultural Museum ahead of time, or there will be a limited number available at the door.
