Halloween Safety Tips for Pet Owners

The Oxford County Animal Rescue has some safety tips for pet owners this Halloween.

OXFORD COUNTY - As we enjoy Halloween this week, it is important to remember safety tips for your pet.

Your furry friends may also be looking for something sweet. Anna Holmes, the Director and Foster Coordinator with Oxford County Animal Rescue, says you should keep an eye on your bowl of candy

"It is not good for our pets. Be a little more cautious about where we're leaving the bowl of candy we give out to the kids, as well as if your little ones are coming home with some treats where those treats are being left. Chocolate of course is a very bad one."

Holmes knows of one dog that required emergency surgery after eating 15 chocolate bars with the wrappers.

She says it's also important to find a safe room in the house for your pet during prime trick-or-treating hours.

"For both cats and dogs, because cats can get panicked and scoot out as well.  I always advise to put them into a room that they are safe in so that there isn't any opportunity for them to dart out the door and be gone."
