TVDSB offering High School, Here I Come! program for 12th year
OXFORD COUNTY - The Thames Valley District School Board is looking to make the transition into high school a little easier for area kids.
They are once again hosting their High School, Here I Come program coming up in August.
Summer School Principal Carla Trembley says "It's a big leap from an elementary school to a secondary school and a lot of kids really don't know what to expect so just giving the opportunity to experience the learning environment, gives them sort of a leg up and an understanding of what it is they are going to be doing once they hit grade 9."
"Grade 9 is a very important year for them. It sort of sets the foundation for future learning so anything that parents and students can do to sort of enhance skills prior to entering high school, is only going to benefit them in the long run."
"I think that being able to give them an opportunity to actually interact with one another face to face in an environment they are going to be spending a lot of time in, at least for the next four years, I think it really behoves parents and students to really take advantage of the opportunity."
The program, open to all Grade 8 students, explores topics such as academic expectations and study skills, getting and staying organized, getting involved in the school community and an introduction to the Grade 9 English and math curricula. Students also have an opportunity to update their literacy, numeracy and study skills.
The program is offered at each of the Thames Valley's high schools from August 18 through 21 from 9am to 12:30pm.
Registration for the program closes August 13.
