Staff at the Woodstock General Hospital turned out to support Colon Cancer Awareness Day.
WOODSTOCK - Colon Cancer Awareness Day was celebrated at the Woodstock General Hospital this morning with a picture of supporters in the main lobby to support the cause. Endoscopic Nurse at the hospital Chris Blum explains the symptoms that one will feel that experience colon cancer. "It is actually quite silent we don't always know that we have polyp or colon cancer until the symptoms are quite developed. We want to provide opportunities for colon screening that will prevent colon cancer." Blum also explained where the money raised will be going "The funds for today's Wear Blue Day are going to the Woodstock Hospital Foundation and directed to RNFS Screening Program"
Chris Blum wants everyone to get checked and explained how to do just that. "I am providing a program that provides screening for patients who are average risk for getting colon cancer. They are patients who are non symptomatic between 50-74 who have a negative stool test that has been checked by their family physician."
Among the festivities that took place in the Hospital this morning for Colon Cancer Awareness Day was a poster that described the type of cancer that is the 3rd most common in the province. Director of Surgical Services, Janice Koekebakker discussed the importance of this certain poster. "Every other year there is a National Operating Room Nurses Conference and they ask for submissions for poster contests nation wide and this year it is being held in Edmonton. This poster is one that is going to be entered into the national conference." Adults over the age of 50 are the most affected by this cancer but if detected early has a 90% cure rate.
