King Charles the Third will issue a televised statement at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth the Second, yesterday.
LONDON - The 10-day mourning period has begun in Britain, following the death of Queen Elizabeth the Second.
She passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland yesterday. She was 96-years-old and her reign lasted 70 years.
Her 73-year-old son Charles is now King and will now be known as King Charles the Third. He's going to meet with Britain's prime minister today and he's also going to address the nation at 6:00 p.m. British Summer Time, which works out to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Bells will toll and 96-gun salutes are also planned in London, one for each year of the Queen's life.
Several Canadian politicians issued statements following the Queen's death yesterday.
In an emotional televised statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said she was "one of my favourite people in the world and I will miss her so." Trudeau also said she was the Queen for almost half of Canada's existence and she had an "obvious, deep and abiding love and affection for Canadians."
Governor General Mary Simon also issued a televised statement saying the late Queen considered Canada to be her second home.
In Ontario, lieutenant-governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell issued a statement of her own saying the queen was "a beacon of enduring good and a symbol of constancy."
In his own statement, Premier Doug Ford said the Queen taught people the true meaning of selfless service.
It was with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada’s longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant presence in our lives – and her service to Canadians will forever remain an important part of our country’s history.
