Women suffering from Maternal Mental Health issues in Oxford County need to know they are not alone.
Oxford County Public Health will join organizations from across the globe to mark the first ever Maternal Mental Health Day.
They want to remind current and soon to be mothers about all of the support available in Oxford to help deal with things like Postpartum Mood Disorder. Public Health Nurse Carrie Skillings tells Heart FM PPMD symptoms can start when you are pregnant.
"Postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and even obsessive compulsive disorder, so they may have feelings of being overwhelmed or anxious, difficulties sleeping, they may feel sad or hopeless and feel like they are not bonding to their babies."
Skillings says they do offer a MOMS group that meets every Tuesday from 1-3 pm at the Ontario Early Years Centre.
"So basically the women come and we just talk about the challenges that they are facing and the women support each other, we also provide some child care at that time so the women get some time to themselves and some nutritious snacks as well."
Since 2009, nearly 90 women have taken part in the free program, which also offers childcare and refreshments at no cost.
