The Hawkins-Gignac Act is celebrating 10 years since being passed by the Ontario government.
ONTARIO - Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is very dangerous.
It is the reason behind the Hawkins-Gignac Act. It requires all homes with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage to have a working CO alarm installed near sleeping areas. John Gignac started the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation for C-O Education after he lost his niece Laurie Hawkins and her family to carbon monoxide poisoning.
"I started up the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation in honour of their name, and the first thing I did was to try to get the law passed in Ontario, which we succeeded 10 years ago."
After many attempts by Oxford MPP, Ernie Hardeman, the law finally passed in the Legislature, which you can read about here. The official date it became law was October 15, 2014. Gignac says education is the driving force behind the Foundation and knows the people of Woodstock have been doing their part.
"Everybody in Woodstock, I know is educated. So, we need them to make sure they help the other people in their community, like their neighbours. So, this year what we are doing is paying attention to retired and senior citizens."
