Oxford County Council discussed lowering the Farm Tax Ratio at their recent meeting.
Councillors Don McKay and Margaret Lupton joined Warden Mayberry in a push to lower the rate from 0.25 to 0.22.
Mayberry explains they thought the break was warranted because farm land doesn't use things like sewer and water service.
"Having the agricultural land pay about 6% of the total tax bill probably makes sense when you consider that the farm land doesn't use a lot of the services provided by the county of even the lower tiers."
Mayberry says a lower ratio could help the rate for farmers fall more in line with residential properties.
"The increase for the residential property owners, they saw an increase in their percentage of about 1.5% but when you do it on the farm land they would see an increase of about 16% to 17%."
In the end councillors voted 7-3 to keep the rate at 0.25.
