The controversial flag policy bylaw will be brought to Norwich Township Council for final approval tonight.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Norwich Township Council is about to look over the controversial flag policy bylaw.
If it's passed tonight, it would only allow for the Norwich, Ontario, and Canadian flags to be flown on Township property.
There will be a few exceptions to this rule and you can find them below:
- Streetlights will be able to hang banners that promote downtown businesses
- The Norwich Community Centre will be able to display banners for local hockey teams
- If a dignitary visits from another country or province, the Township will display their flag during the visit
You can read the full motion online here. Tonight's meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. and it will be livestreamed online here.
Ward 1 Councillor John Scholten brought forward a motion calling for this flag policy bylaw on March 28th and it was passed by council with a vote of 3-2 on April 25th. Council also declined a motion to proclaim June as Pride Month during the April 25th meeting.
The matter has sparked outrage from members and supporters of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The Executive Director of the Children's Aid Society of Oxford County has written a letter to the Township encouraging it to reconsider. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County has also offered to return the funds it has received from the municipality because its values no longer align with the Township.
