A heads up for parents in Oxford County after a family near London had their nursery camera hacked.
Middlesex OPP say the parents were rocking their child to sleep in the nursery when the internet camera used to monitor the room was remotely activated. The parents could hear voices on the other end and eerie music was coming from the camera. The internet provider later confirmed the home's router had been hacked.
The OPP reminds citizens that security cameras and monitoring systems may be susceptible to hackers.
Some have features which enable users to view their security camera from a remote location. An app or website is typically used to gain access to footage remotely. Cameras may have this option enabled by default, leaving the camera open to hackers.
To minimize risks, check the manual for details and/or contact the manufacturer, purchase from a trusted source, change the default password, be diligent with remote monitoring, and cover cameras when not in use.
