Nine people have died this year in Ontario while riding an Off Road Vehicle.
The most recent death happened near Peterborough and involved a 9 year old boy. This is the highest number of off road vehicle deaths in the Province since 2009 and this time last year only one ORV fatality was recorded. With this in mind the OPP want to get the message out to Oxford Riders to be careful and make sure you are driving safely. Constable Ed Sanchuk says all of the deaths had three common factors. "And what we found in the investigations into these incidents is that alcohol was involved in five of the incidents, speeding was a factor in three of them and five of the deceased were not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident."
Sanchuk says the OPP are encouraging riders in Oxford County to always wear your helmet and watch your speeds. Also driving impaired on an ATV or off road vehicle is the exact same charge as driving impaired in a car. "This spike in fatalities serves as a harsh reminder that unsafe off-roading keeps costing riders of all ages their lives, leaving families devastated and struggling to understand why their loved ones did not stay safe while out riding."
