The opening ceremony for the 2023 Ontario Mixed and Senior Mixed Curling Championships took place at the Woodstock Curling Centre last night.
WOODSTOCK - About 150 people packed the Woodstock Curling Centre to mark the beginning of the 2023 Ontario Mixed and Senior Mixed Curling Championships.
The opening ceremony happened last night. The 64 curlers hit the ice with designated sign bearers for each team.
Judy Farlow, a Co-Convener for the championships, says Woodstock is happy to host this special event.
"It's a real honour because it's all about the community of curling, the quality of curling and continuing to demonstrate to the community (both the City of Woodstock and the County of Oxford) how important curling is and what a great facility we have here."
Each team competing in the Mixed Championships includes two men and two women of any age. The Senior Mixed Championship teams also include two men and two women, but the women must be at least 45 years old and the men have to be over 50.
All of the action began yesterday afternoon and the finals for both tournaments will be happening this Sunday. It's free to stop by the Curling Centre to watch the games in person or you can livestream them online here.
Farlow says the championships will provide a big boost to the local economy.
"These people are staying in hotels, eating in restaurants and they're shopping! We have great partnerships with lots of the businesses in the City so we have given the teams coupons and references on where to go."
