It has been 10 years since the Oxford County Cheese Trail was first introduced.
OXFORD - Tourism Oxford is celebrating the 10th anniversary of a tourism staple in our community.
The Oxford County Cheese Trail officially launched back in 2015. Cathy Bingham, a retired Tourism Specialist for Oxford County, says the self-guided tour had 27 stops back then.
"Oxford County has one of the richest cheese histories in Canada, stretching back to the 1800s, when close to 100 cheese factories dotted the County."
The Oxford County Cheese Trail received the Tourism of Excellence Award for Leadership in 2016.
It offers Big Cheese Days every Saturday in May with features special offers, hands on experiences, cheese factory tours and more. Big Cheese Days receive the Event of the Year Award at the Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence and Tourism in 2019.
Meredith Maywood, the current Tourism Specialist for Oxford County, says its hard to imagine Oxford County without the Oxford County Cheese Trail.
"I am forever grateful to my predecessor, Cathy Bingham, who came up with the Oxford County Cheese Trail concept over 10 years ago. The trail has been a remarkable success, attracting visitors from across the globe, and is a real economic driver for the region."
The trail now includes 31 stops, including six local cheese factories, two ice cream makers, and three cheese shops.
