A person was charged on News Year Day on Highway 2, just south of Highway 401.
The person was one of the first in the province charged under the new penalties that took effect on January 1st. If charged and convicted, drivers will now receive a fine of $615, if settled out of court; a fine of up to $1000 if a summons is received or if the ticket is fought and lost in court; three demerit points, and a three day licence suspension. The penalties continue to rise upon subsequent convictions.
Novice drivers (G1, G2, M1 or M2) who are convicted of distracted driving will receive the same fines, but will receive longer licence suspensions as opposed to demerit points.
Staff Sergeant Brian Knowler says let's start 2019 off the right way; put down the phone, focus on the road, drive to the weather and road conditions.
"These new penalties are the direct result of needless tragedies. Distracted driving continues to be one of the biggest threats on Ontario roadways, and all road users have a part to play in road safety efforts."
