The Oxford County Police-Hospital Transition Protocol creates a smooth transition for people who are arrested under the Mental Health Act and require care.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford County Police-Hospital Transition Protocol is making a positive impact on the community.
The act was signed in 2021 to help provide smoother transitions for patients apprehended by police under the Mental Health Act who require hospital assessments.
Oxford OPP Detachment Commander and Hospital Committee Chair Inspector Tony Hymers said in a press release that the act has provided positive experiences for everyone involved.
"Police hospital transitions across Ontario have historically been a challenging systems issue. A person's mental health crisis should never be about the system - but the person in crisis. The difference our services have seen since the implementation of this process has been a game changer for police, hospital staff and most importantly the patient - who's care should always be at the center of our processes."
Community Partners in the project include the Woodstock Police Service, the Oxford OPP Detachment, Woodstock Hospital, Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, and Alexandra Hospital Ingersoll. They meet quarterly and review the program and ensure sustainability.
The most recent report shows that the act has improved communication and coordination among hospitals and police services.
