OTTAWA - The pharmacare has become law in Canada.
It will inform the creation of any future national universal pharmacare plan. The federal government will sign deals with the provinces and territories, to ensure that diabetes and birth-control medications are covered under the public health system. A deal has already been reached with British Columbia, and Ottawa would like to have more in place by spring 2025.
The Senate passed the pharmacare bill without any changes yesterday and it received royal assent afterward.
This bill was a big part of the now defunct confidence and supply deal between the Trudeau Liberals and the NDP. The NDP supported the minority Liberal government in exchange for securing passage of the pharmacare bill.
