Plans are underway to see a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Chapter start-up in Oxford County. Karmel Smith is getting ready to go through the process, wanting to make a difference in the community. She unfortunately knows first hand the devastation of impaired driving. When Smith was 14, one of her close friends was killed, and another lost a leg in a crash caused by an impaired driver. She's wanting to reach out to speak to high school students. "I want to reach out to the youth, that's what I'm looking at doing, preventing a lot of heartache in the county." She has support from Mary Rodrigues, who has been speaking on behalf of MADD, after her infant son's life was claimed 4-years-ago to a drunk driver. Rodrigues delivered some red ribbons to the Woodstock Police on Thursday, and Constable Darcy Campbell (photo right) tied them on their vehicles ahead of the busy RIDE program season. Rodrigues says, "It's the worst time of year (for impaired driving). There are a lot of parties going on. We just hope that people take care, have fun, but just act responsibly." MADD ribbons would be widely available locally once a MADD Chapter opens here in the next year.
