Includes a Woodstock Police Officer being assaulted at a bar, a case of public intoxication, and a stolen vehicle is recovered
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police were kept busy between the end of December and New Year's.
Last Wednesday police and members of M.A.D.D. were doing RIDE checks at three locations. Of the 625 vehicles checked, four road side tests were issues but no charges were laid.
On Thursday night around 6 police were called out to Norwich Ave and Pavey Street after a man and women were reportedly drinking while behind the wheel. Police caught up with the pair and found an open container of liquor in the vehicle. The driver was charged.
Also on Thursday December 31st around 11:30 police were needed at a bar downtown after complaints of a man threatening people. Security staff were not able to get the man to leave and when police arrived he was trying to leave the bar with an open container of liquor. While police were talking to this man, another man shoved one of the officers hard enough to knock the radio from his uniform. The officer wasn't able to call for backup and a struggle ensued. The officer was able to get the upper hand and put the man under arrest. A spring loaded knife was found on the man. As a result 32 year old Jason Simms was charged with assaulting a peace officer, failing to comply with an undertaking for breaching his condition not to consume alcohol. He was held for a bail hearing.
At the same time a 39 year old Woodstock man was arrested and charged when police watched the man fall over a snow bank and had difficulty getting up. When police asked the man for his identification he produced a Visa card. The man was held in custody until he could sober up.
On New Year's Day a taxi operator found an unknown substance in the back of her cab. She turned it over to police who suspected it to be a gram of cocaine.
Also on New Year's Day, around midnight, Police stopped a vehicle around Dundas Street and Lansdowne. The 53 year old woman driving the vehicle was found to be driving while intoxicated. When she provide a sample of her breath, the device registered an alert and the woman was given a 3 day licence suspension and her vehicle towed.
Yesterday police received a report from OnStar about a vehicle in our area that had been reported as stolen from Kitchener Waterloo. Police located the vehicle at Market Square at 11 that morning and found the male driver. A 50 year old man from Woodstock has been charged and will appear in court next month.
