Indigenous delegation to meet with Pope Francis March 28th - April 1st in Rome.
Pope Francis will discuss healing and reconciliation with an indigenous delegation at the Vatican at the end of March.
A joint statement by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the organizations representing the Assembly of First Nations, Metis National Council and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami says the delegation will meet with the Pope starting at the end of March.
The Holy Father will meet with individual delegations during the week of March 28th, and hold a final audience with all participants on April 1st.
The delegation was originally planned for December 2021, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
"The health and safety of all delegates remain our first priority," the statement reads. "In the weeks ahead, we will monitor conditions leading up to the revised travel dates and continue our dialogue with delegates, public health officials as well as the relevant government and international authorities, traveling only when we feel it is safe to do so."
Calls for an apology from the Catholic Church for the residential school system have intensified after unmarked graves were found at several former residential school sites.
