WOODSTOCK - It was a record setting day at the Walk for Alzheimer's event in Woodstock on Saturday.
Over 500 people came out to the Auditorium to help raise over $135,000 with money still coming in today. Executive Director Shelley Green says both walks in Oxford County were a huge success this year.
"So we are well over our goal of $166,000, we are just at about $174,000 now between the walks in Woodstock and Tillsonburg so we are just absolutely thrilled with the generosity from the community."
Green says all of the money raised in Oxford County will stay in Oxford and will go towards the numerous programs offered by the local Alzheimer's Society.
"The money will stay here in Oxford County and will support the number of programs and services that we have for our clients and the general public. This year we have a goal of raising $300,000 and the walks of course are our biggest fundraiser's. So Oxford County thank you so much, for contributing in so many ways, our volunteers, walkers, donors, sponsors, thank you so much we are so grateful for each and every one of you."
This was the 25th anniversary of the Walk for Alzheimer events in Oxford County. Green says they had so many highlights from this years walk. Green says one thing that she wanted to mention was that Terry Geerlinks was named Queen of the Walk for their anniversary.
"Terry is 90 years old and she has raised $42,000 for us over the years and she had never missed a walk until this year. Very sadly she was attending her son's funeral, her son passed away form Alzheimer's at the age of 65, so we were very sad and very sorry for her whole family. We still honoured her at the walk, we had her picture on the stage and we talked about Terry as well before the Lights of Hope."
