Schools Out for Summer in Oxford County

Shaylyn Jackson with the Woodstock Police Service has some tips to make sure everyone has a safe and happy summer.

OXFORD COUNTY - It's the last day of school for local elementary students in Oxford County.

After today, students within the Thames Valley District School Board, London District Catholic School Board, and CSC Providence will be off for the summer, so you might notice higher pedestrian traffic over the next few months.

Shaylyn Jackson, the Community Service Officer for the Woodstock Police Service, says drivers should be extra vigilant on the roads.

"We want to encourage motorists to slow down, be cautious, and keep an eye out on what's happening around you. We've had a lot of speeding and a lot of impaired drivers lately, so we want to make sure our streets in our city are going to be safe for all of the people who are playing in parks, in their front yards, etc."

Jackson says residential areas and school zone areas have a high level of pedestrian traffic year-round, regardless if school is in or not. That is why school zone speed limits are still enforced in the summer months.

Jackson is also reminding everyone about the importance of wearing a helmet while you're on your bike. You should also check the expiry date before putting it on, and make sure it's not damaged.

Even though the kids are off, lots of parents and guardians still have to work throughout the summer months. Jackson says they should always know where their kids are, and has this piece of advice.

"If they have a cellphone, turn on the Share My Location feature with your child so you can keep an eye on them. I don't recommend using the location features on third-party apps like SnapChat just because it is less secure. Other people don't need to know where your kids are, but you do."

Kids should have an adult present if they are planning on swimming, fishing, or doing any sort of open-water activity this summer. Jackson says that adult should also be very vigilant, adding drowning can be silent.

If you are planning a family getaway this summer, Jackson says you should make sure all of your windows are doors are locked before you head out. You should also install timed lights outside so it looks like someone is home, and have a friend or neighbour pick up your mail and packages for you.

Jackson stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Friday June 21st. You can listen to the full interview below:
