OXFORD COUNTY - Starting on Friday, you will not be able to purchase a plastic bag for your groceries at the Sobey's stores in Canada.
The corporation made the announcement last year and this will take effect at all 255 locations across Canada, including the two stores in Oxford County in Woodstock and Tillsonburg. This small change will take 255 million plastic grocery bags out of circulation every year.
Sobeys Inc says they are committed towards eliminating unnecessary plastic from grocery stores. The City of Woodstock had also previously looked at banning single use plastic bags, however they decided to defer that decision for now.
President and CEO for Sobeys Michael Medline explains their decision to remove plastic bags.
"So many of our customers and our employees have told us loud and clear -- they want us to use less plastic -- and we agree with them. This is a first step, and we plan to make meaningful progress every year to take plastic out of our stores and our products. We decided to act now instead of taking years to study and only make long-term commitments. We're taking action now, making a tangible difference today and into the future. This is a significant first step, but it’s only a first step. We need to go further, and we will."
