ONTARIO - Strong Mayor Powers are coming to more councils in Ontario.
A total of 169 municipalities will get access beginning May 1st. On that list are more areas within Oxford County. Woodstock was the first to gain Strong Mayor powers on October 31, 2023, and it will now be joined by the Township of East Zorra-Tavistock, the Town of Ingersoll, the Township of South-West Oxford, and the Town of Tillsonburg.
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Rob Flack, says expanding is something that will only benefit the common goal the province has set out.
"Heads of Council are key partners in our efforts to build homes and infrastructure across the province. By extending strong mayor powers to these additional municipalities, we are providing mayors every tool at our disposal to empower them to get homes and infrastructure built faster. Mayors know their municipalities best, and we support them in taking bold actions for their communities."
With the expanded list, heads of council of single and lower-tier municipalities with councils of six members or more the ability to support shared provincial-municipal priorities, such as encouraging the approval of new housing and constructing and maintaining infrastructure to support housing, including roads and transit.
