It's the last day of school, so the Oxford OPP and the Woodstock Police have some safety tips to make sure everyone has a safe and fun summer vacation.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's the day kids in Oxford County have been waiting for!
It's the last day of school today which marks the beginning of their summer vacation.
This means lots of families might be planning a summer getaway over the next few months. Oxford OPP Constable Patti Cote says you should consider hiring a house sitter if that's the case.
"Have somebody look after it. Make sure somebody puts your garbage out and maybe even cuts your grass while you're away. If you have a way to put lights on timers so it appears that somebody is home, that would be a good idea as well."
Cote would like to remind everyone to wear their seatbelt in the vehicle and to make sure they are following the proper car seat safety rules for young children. You should never leave a child or a pet unattended in a vehicle, especially on a hot day.
The Oxford OPP also has tips for those who are staying at home this summer.
If you own a pool, make sure there is a responsible adult around whenever kids go swimming. Cote says your pool should be secure if there isn't one around.
"Have a lock on the gate that goes in your backyard because that is where it starts. You also should have a lock on the gate that enters the pool area if it is separated in your yard. Even above-ground pools that have steps, make sure those steps are locked so no one can get up those stairs."
Cote would also like to make sure that kids are wearing a helmet whenever they ride their bikes this summer, adding it is mandatory for anyone under 18. She also recommends knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards for those who are skateboarding or riding a scooter.
The Woodstock Police Service is bringing back it's positive ticketing program this summer. This means officers will be handing out coupons for a free ice cream cone from McDonalds or a free Crazy Bread from Little Cesars to those kids who are following bike safety rules. The WPS is also asking drivers out there to be extra cautious this summer, with more kids outside playing in the streets.
Cote says you should always "keep your head on a swivel" whenever you're watching children. If you have to leave your kids at home with a babysitter this summer, make sure they have access to a phone so they can call someone in the event of an emergency.
