SOUTH-WEST OXFORD - South-West Oxford Township is doing what they can to get more affordable housing in the area.
Council voted to reduce the minimum square footage of a house from a 1001 square feet to 538 which allows for construction of smaller, and hopefully less expensive homes. Mayor David Mayberry points out that it is almost impossible for anyone earning less than $25 an hour to get into the housing market.
"We need either more rental units, or we need smaller units that are maybe more affordable or attainable. So we are looking at, if we reduce the square feet and council voted to reduce the square feet from 1001 to 538, to make it so that people could build more."
He also notes that homes starting at a thousand square feet are just too big for some people. He adds that to get more people housed there either has to be an increase in rental stock, or smaller homes to allow people to purchase at a lower price.
