The World Crokinole Championships return to Tavistock for the 18th year this weekend.
TAVISTOCK - Hundreds of the top crokinole players in the world will be in Tavistock this weekend.
The 18th annual World Crokinole championships will take place at the arena. They have competitions for everyone including doubles, singles, events for the kids, and a competitive competition. Sherrill Calder is in charge of the registration for the championships and says crokinole was invented in Tavistock by Wayne Kelly.
"Tavistock is pretty much the home of crokinole; the first documented crokinole was built in Sebastopol, which is just a mile down the road from Tavistock by Wayne Kelly. He built it for his son Adam for his 5th birthday. The joke of course is that Adam didn't like the game and it sat on their kitchen wall for many years."
Calder says the weekend is always a nice little boost for the local economy.
"It's also a chance for Tavistock to show itself off. So for Crokinole Day we have sidewalk sales, the main street is closed off, we have lots of food vendors and it is just a busy, busy day."
Calder says a number of prizes will be handed out including a very impressive top prize.
"The $1,000 prize that goes to the top person in competitive singles, so by the time you get to the end of the day, where they are playing for that top prize of a $1,000, you can hear a pin drop in the arena - it is that quiet.
They do have some spots open if you are interested in signing up for the event and it is free if you just want to stop by and watch. You can find more information on their web site www.worldcrokinole.com
