Thieves Using Technology to Steal High-End Vehicles

Thieves have been using Relay and Reprogramming technology to steal vehicles with keyless entry and push start technology.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service has responded to several high-end vehicle thefts over the past month and they all have something in common.

They were all newer model pickup trucks and SUVs with keyless entry and push start technology. The vehicles are usually taken overnight and police say culprits are using Relay and Reprogramming technology.

The Relay technology allows thieves to pick up the signal from a key fob that's inside a home and enhance it, which allows them to get in the vehicle and drive off without the key. The Reprogramming technology allows the culprits to special device to reprogram the vehicle to a blank key fob so they can keep using it.

Woodstock Police have some tips to make sure this doesn't happen to you. This includes parking your vehicle inside a garage if possible, and using a steering wheel locking device. You can use a special device to block access to the onboard diagnostic port so thieves can't reprogram your key fob. You can also store your key fob in a frequency shielding bag/pouch, which blocks other signals when the key fob is not in use.

Police also recommend installing an aftermarket GPS tracker, which can help locate your vehicle if it ever gets stolen.

Anyone with information regarding a recent vehicle theft should call the Woodstock Police Service at 519-537-2323. You can also submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
