Tillsonburg will be hearing more "I do's" now that council approved civil marriage ceremonies. The province has allowed Municipal Clerks to perform such services since 2004. But it seemed to have been lost in the paperwork since Tillsonburg looked into certification eight years ago. The town has finally created a by-law allowing the Town Clerk to perform civil marriages. Town Clerk Donna Wilson will perform the ceremonies. She says they decided to create a bylaw after recognizing its revenue, "We have a committee that was put together to try and find savings for the town as well as to produce revenue. And this was one of the things to look into, moving forward with this." Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif says it won't be a huge attraction, "I think I heard about 10 percent of the marriages in Ontario are performed by Clerks. So it's not as if there's going to be a line up at the door day after day, but it does offer people in the community a service that they might otherwise go somewhere else for and provides an opportunity for us to build some revenue." The town expects a minimum of 30 services each year, with each ceremony only lasting 15 to 20 minutes. The cost will be $250-$300 each.
