County seeking public input on draft Trails Master Plan
With so many small trails throughout Oxford, County officials are looking at ways to connect them all.
Council was presented with a draft Trails Master Plan Wednesday morning that sets out a framework for developing a trail network over the next twenty years.
Project Planner at MMM Group Claire Basinski says one challenge which is also a great opportunity is the ability to link up trails with the help of private land owners.
"That private land ownership, they are great opportunities for off road trail connections. Now we have been hearing a lot about people who are interested in providing those connections, interested in connecting up their lands to get to those off road systems so I think the knowledge is growing that that's the opportunity."
Basinski says it's difficult to pin point a definite cost for the project.
"We have a unit cost in the Master Plan however trails projects have a lot of considerations that you need to move forward with. You know, width can be very different, surface type can be very different, slope can be very different so you need to address it on more of a project by project basis to get a better understanding of the actual cost of these links."
Basinski says it was great to hear from each County Councillor about the efforts they are already making to create trail systems in their communities.
"That just shows the commitment and interest and there were a number of councillors who noted that just the cultural shift and the mentality toward the importance of trails and cycling and investment in those types of opportunities it was amazing to see that everybody was really on the same page."
The County is asking for public comment on the Trails Master Plan until April 25th. Locals can access the draft document by visiting the Speak Up, Oxford! section of the County's website.
