The Russian military has invaded several Ukrainian cities and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be meeting with G7 partners today to collectively respond.
UKRAINE - Explosions have rocked several Ukrainian cities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine. The Russian military moved in early Thursday morning. In a televised address, Putin stated that the military invasion is needed to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine.
An advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the Russian forces have launched the attack from the north, east and south. He also reported at least 40 deaths this morning including civilian and military casualties.
Zelenskyy has declared martial law and he's now calling on other world leaders to provide defense assistance.
In a statement late last night, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the Russian military action, saying it's a clear violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He's calling on Russia cease all actions against Ukraine and withdraw military forces from the country.
Trudeau says he will be meeting with G7 partners today and will work with NATO to "collectively respond to these reckless and dangerous acts, including by imposing significant sanctions in addition to those already announced."
Canada condemns – in the strongest possible terms – Russia’s egregious attack on Ukraine. These unprovoked actions are a clear further violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and of Russia’s obligations under international law and the Charter of the UN.
