General Motors and Unifor reached a tentative agreement early this morning, avoiding job action at CAMI in Ingersoll.
INGERSOLL - Job action has been averted at CAMI in Ingersoll.
Unifor National President Lana Payne says a tentative agreement was reached with General Motors early this morning.
"Congratulations to our bargaining committee for their incredible work at the bargaining table. Every member of our team was instrumental in fighting for and winning this tentative agreement on behalf of all Unifor Local 88 members at CAMI."
The union says the ratification meeting will take place on Sunday September 22nd and that's when its members find out the details.
Unifor Local 88 Plant Chair Mike Van Boekel believes the union members will be happy with the deal.
"We had very clear goals heading into bargaining set by our members and I believe that we have reached a tentative agreement that reflects those goals. I want to thank our members for their support and solidarity throughout bargaining and our entire negotiating team for working around the clock to secure a contract that we can be proud of."
More than 1,100 unionized employees work at CAMI Assembly, which is the only large-scale electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Canada. When you also take the GM Battery Assembly facility into account, this brings the total number of unionized workers to 1,300. Going into the contract talks, Payne said the union was looking for better pay, job security and better pension plans.
The unionized workers had voted 97 percent in favour of job action an agreement wasn't reached by September 17th, but Unifor extended the deadline yesterday.
