Voter turnout was up significantly last night in Oxford County as Dave Mackenzie won by over 17,000 votes.
OXFORD COUNTY - Incumbent Conservative MP Dave Mackenzie won by a landslide last night.
Mackenzie earned 29,209 votes, beating the second place finisher, NDP candidate Matthew Chambers by a healthy margin. Chambers finished with 12,188 votes. Liberal Candidate Brendan Knight was close behind with 11,621 votes, Green candidate Lisa Birtch Carierre garnered 4,699 votes, PPC candidate Wendy Martin had 1,796 votes, followed by CHP candidate Melody Aldred who finished with 976 votes.
Voter turnout last night was up significantly in the County, which is follows a three election cycle trend. A total of 60,489 people cast a ballot in Oxford County last year. That compares to 56,850 from 2015 and only 48,804 people voted in 2011. That is a 6% increase in 2019, compared to 2015 and a 19% increase from 2011.
Other notable numbers last night, the Green party gained over 4,000 votes compared to 2015 and the Liberal party lost well over 6,000 votes. The Liberal loss can be attributed in part to the difference in candidates for this election cycle. In 2015, the Liberal party had respected politician and former Warden and current mayor of East-Zorra Tavistock Don McKay as their candidate. This time around the party had a relative unknown Brendan Knight, who does not live in the County. The NDP party say a 3,000 vote gain.
Nationally the voter turnout was roughly 66 percent of eligible voters casting a ballot. That is down from 2015 when an amazing 68.3% percent of eligible voters cast a ballot.
