Southwestern Public Health has some tips on how Woodstock residents can protect themselves from West Nile virus.
WOODSTOCK - A mosquito trap in Woodstock has tested positive for West Nile virus.
Southwestern Public Health has traps set up throughout the region and this trap was discovered during regular testing.
Most people with West Nile virus don't get sick, but those who do experience mild flu-like symptoms for the most part.
Less than one percent of people with West Nile get seriously ill, but health officials are still recommending that you wear bug spray with DEET to protect yourself whenever mosquitos are present. You should also wear light-coloured clothing with long pants, sleeves, and socks.
The health unit says you should remove areas with standing water around your property in order to reduce mosquito breeding environments. The water in your birth bath should be replaced once a day, you should have a screen covering your rain barrel, and make sure the pump is circulating if you have a pool.
